Mechanism of action

Pre-treatment / baseline requirements
Baseline CBC and iron studies; baseline phosphorus can be considered (risk of hypophosphatemia); assess prior IV iron reactions; monitor vitals.
Common side effects
Nausea, hypertension, flushing, injection site reactions.
Serious adverse effects / key risks
Hypersensitivity; hypophosphatemia (can be symptomatic); iron overload.

How it works
Replaces iron through an IV to help rebuild iron stores and hemoglobin.
Before treatment
Tell your clinician if you have an active infection/fever, are pregnant/planning pregnancy, or have major heart/nerve problems. Depending on the medication, you may need labs or screening tests (e.g., TB/hepatitis) and a vaccine review.
Common side effects
Nausea, hypertension, flushing, injection site reactions.
Get urgent help for
Hypersensitivity; hypophosphatemia; iron overload.
On treatment day
Plan to stay for monitoring. If you feel dizzy, drowsy, or unwell afterward, do not drive and follow your clinician’s instructions.
