Pre-treatment / baseline requirements

Renal function (SCr/eGFR) prior to each dose; baseline calcium/vitamin D; dental evaluation for ONJ risk; ensure hydration; avoid in significant renal impairment per PI.

Common side effects

Acute phase reaction (fever, myalgias), headache, arthralgia.

Serious adverse effects / key risks

Renal toxicity; hypocalcemia; osteonecrosis of the jaw; atypical femur fracture.

How it works

Bisphosphonate inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption.

Before treatment

Tell your clinician if you have an active infection/fever, are pregnant/planning pregnancy, or have major heart/nerve problems. Depending on the medication, you may need labs or screening tests (e.g., TB/hepatitis) and a vaccine review.

Common side effects

Acute phase reaction, headache, arthralgia.

Get urgent help for

Renal toxicity; hypocalcemia; osteonecrosis of the jaw; atypical femur fracture.

On treatment day

Plan to stay for monitoring. If you feel dizzy, drowsy, or unwell afterward, do not drive and follow your clinician’s instructions.
